Traffic Safety in Vietnam
SCOOTERS are the primary form of transport in Ho Chi Minh City, but they can be dangerous to drive if you’re unfamiliar with local driving customs. For international drivers accustomed to the rule of law, Vietnamese riders will seem unpredictable—they can stop or pull in front of you without warning, drive the wrong way down narrow, busy alleyways, and switch to the footpath when it suits them.
Bike accidents are one of the largest health concerns in Vietnam. HELMETS should be worn at all times when riding motorbikes and bicycles, whether you’re the passenger or the driver.
If you’re driving a scooter here, give yourself time to PRACTICE, take it slow, and make sure you get a local LICENSE or register your international license—or you’ll be unable to drive legally and won’t be covered by your medical insurance.
If you’re involved in or witness a traffic accident in HCMC, call Emergency Medical Response *9999.
